The Canadian Red Cross’s AFA or EMR Renewal Course, otherwise known as Professional Responder, is  approved by Workplace Health and Safety (WH&S) in Alberta under the Canadian Red Cross. It is equivalent to an OFA 3 in British Columbia and meets the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard Z1210-17 – Advanced.

The AFA or EMR renewal course is forty hours in duration. This course explores assessment and treatment priorities within the context of the primary and secondary assessment. Primary considerations focus on the recognition and treatment of immediate life threatening emergencies. Such emergencies, primarily Airway, Breathing and Circulatory challenges, result in shock. Recognition of shock and its underlying cause(s) is a key consideration to prevent physiological deterioration. CPR is practiced on feedback mannikins to achieve high quality compression delivery. Team involvement is emphasized to integrate other priority interventions such as  airway management, oxygen administration, AED setup and shock delivery. Head, neck, spine and extremity trauma is reviewed with emphasis placed on practicing rolls and  correctly using immobilization devices.
