The Red Cross BLS Provider Renewal course is meant for Healthcare Providers (HCP) who do not work for Alberta Health Services (AHS) for which the Heart and Stroke BLS course is mandatory and who have a current BLS Provider certificate. There are many professions who may enjoy another option to the Heart and Stroke BLS Provider Course: the Red Cross makes this option available. Breath for Life will offer the BLS Provider Renewal course to those who would like to recertify any valid and current BLS certificate. A certificate is valid within one year of taking the course.

Professions that may qualify for the Red Cross BLS Provider Renewal course include: Dental Hygienists and Dental Assistants, Chiropractors, Nursing staff (Aides, Assistants, etc) who work in continuing care without a mandate to take the Heart and Stroke course: clarification with your Governing Body or Administration around this does matters so that an error in course choice does not occur.

The Red Cross BLS Provider Renewal course focuses on CPR delivery, to the various age groups, defibrillation using an AED and the use of a bag valve mask (BVM); it does NOT include First Aid content. This is a practice based course with an emphasis on achieving uncompromising, high quality CPR. The safe delivery of air volume, using a BVM, is practiced within the context of CPR and the compression to ventilation ratios that apply to the different age groups. BLS Provider Renewal Course Details

• Duration:  2.5 – 3 hours
• Cost: $80+gst ($4.00) for the BLS Provider Renewal
  • Oxygen Administration and Airway Management: $80.00 + GST ($4.00)
• Certificate: On completion of this course the Red Cross will issue a BLS Provider certificate to your Red Cross account; certificates are valid for 1 year.
