Basic or Emergency First Aid Renewal Course

The Basic or Emergency First Aid Renewal Course, formerly known as Emergency First Aid in Alberta, approved by OH&S through the Canadian Red Cross, fulfills the certification requirements of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) for a Basic or Emergency First Aid Renewal course. This half-day renewal course, focuses on recognizing Life-Threatening emergencies involving Airway, Breathing and Circulatory challenges and appropriate scope of practice First Aid care.
A Primary survey assessment includes recognition of problems related to these three areas, calling 911 and supporting the person at a First Aid Level until EMS arrives. Shock awareness is reviewed in relation to cause and recognition. As shock represents a life threat, addressing the cause through an informed care approach may prevent further deterioration and possible death.
CPR and AED practice is emphasized during the Emergency First Aid Renewal course, placing a high priority emphasis on team and quality compression delivery. As coronary artery disease and cardiac arrest are the leading cause of death in Canada, skill development practice takes on a high level of importance. As the Basic or Emergency First Aid Renewal course is often confused with the Intermediate or Standard First Aid Renewal course please ensure your certificate has the following identifier Basic or Emergency First Aid Renewal. This course is offered in-house only and does not include an on-line component.
Emergency First Aid Renewal Course Details
- Time: 8:00 – 1 PM (In-class only)
- Duration: 5 Hours
- Cost: $100+GST = $105.00 (Digital manual or e-book included)
- If you want to purchase a hard copy of the Emergency First Aid manual the cost is $25.00 plus tax.
- Certificate: The Canadian Red Cross will issue a certificate to you upon completion of the course; certificates are valid for three years.
- The title on your certificate must match the ‘Basic First Aid Renewal’ course title
- A valid and current Basic or Emergency First Aid certificate, from an approved agency, will be accepted
- If your certificate has expired beyond the date illustrated on your certificate, you must take the 1 day course
