The Red Cross First Responder Course is taken by those interested in first aid beyond an intermediate level and are active in providing initial and critical life-saving care. Professions that take this course may include fire fighters, law enforcement, ski patrol rescue teams to name a few. This 40 hour course delves into the essential components of a primary and secondary assessment with the primary assessment focusing on life-threatening problems.
An important focus of the First Responder course is to ensure that Airway, Breathing and Circulatory challenges are recognized and managed correctly to prevent a life-threatening outcome. Shock, suggestive of systemic shutdown, must be recognized early and the underlying problem identified and properly managed to prevent further physiological decline. Congruent with this primary focus, high quality CPR will be practiced on feedback device mannikins. These mannikins are designed to reinforce the standards of compression delivery. AED setup and application will be incorporated into the CPR session along with the use of bag valve masks (BVM). Airway adjuncts and suctioning are also scope of practice skills that will be practiced.
Head, Neck and Spine trauma management is also a focus of the First Responder course. Learning how to roll a person correctly without exacerbating a pre-existing injury will be practiced along with cervical collar application and securing a person to a long backboard. The principles of splinting will be reviewed and practiced.
The instructor of this course will engage the participant in their learning as they delve into deeper understandings of various medical/traumatic situations and acquire proficiency in skill development.
