Heart and Stroke
The Heart and Stroke BLS Provider Course (formerly called HCP-C) is the required CPR course for health-care providers who work with AHS. This course emphasizes high-quality CPR delivery using feedback device mannikins. On-going feedback is a motivator for improved performance and may improve resuscitation outcomes. A core component of all CPR courses is setting up and using an AED. AED application will be practiced along with the safe administration of a shock.
The goal the BLS Provider course is to perfect practice to improve survival outcomes: practice is performed in teams to facilitate the effective and efficient delivery of BLS skills. Included in this course is ventilating using a Bag-Valve-Mask which facilitates the safe administration of oxygen. Adult, child and infant skills are practiced based on curriculum expectations. The Heart and Stroke BLS Provider course is approved by the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Alberta Health Services (AHS), follows ILCOR guidelines and as per the Heart and Stroke you must renew your certificate yearly. BLS Provider Course Details:

- Duration: 4 hours (In-class)
- Cost: $75.00 + GST = $78.75
- Manuals: $25.00 plus GST: current version (2020)
- Certificate: The Heart and Stroke BLS Provider Course certificate is valid for 1 year
If you do not work for AHS and do not require the Heart and Stroke BLS Provider course the Red Cross has a BLS Provider course which will be available in January.
- The BLS Provider course is intended for those working within the medical professions and is not the same as the CPR Level C course which focuses on lay provider skills
